  • City and municipal codes have specific requirements for re-establishing gas service to a property.
  • If gas service has been discontinued and has been plugged, tagged, or pulled by a municipality then a gas test must be performed. (this does not apply if a current homeowner has a non-payment issue)
  • Gas servicewill not be restored by the municipality until a gas test has been completed.
  • When a gas test is required, the gas system of the residence (the piping) must be tested by licensed plumbing contractors to determine if a leak(s) exists. Call Southwest Plumbing’s direct customer service number 512-392-4022 to schedule a residential gas test.
  • Gas leak detection testing is done by applying a gauge to test the pressure of the system and monitoring that pressure over a specific period of time.
  • All the gas appliances and any gas outlets at the residence must be inspected to verify that they comply with the municipalities’ codes.
  • In order to perform a gas test, a permit is required by the municipality in which the residence is located.
  • Southwest Plumbing has a flat rate price for a residential gas test and the flat rate price includes the permit. Call Southwest Plumbing at 512-392-4022 for current pricing for your gas test.
  • If leaking is detected in the gas system, the next step is to locate the leak(s) and make the appropriate gas repairs. Our flat rate pricing does not cover any needed repairs, there will be an extra charge.  Our plumbers will explan in detail with you the repair costs based on our findings.
  • Please note that in some instances, re-piping will be more cost effective than searching for multiple leaks. The re-piping option will be offered at a fixed price if applicable.  Our plumber will discuss options with you.
  • Appliances that use gas (i. e. water heaters, furnaces, stoves & ovens, fireplaces, gas grills) will need to be inspected and must meet municipality codes. If repairs/upgrades are needed, a flat rate price will be given.
  • Once all the gas repairs and code issues have been addressed, we will contact the municipality and schedule an inspection. Please note that the inspection can occur as long as 48 hours after the municipality is contacted.
  • Following the successful inspection by the municipality, they will contact the gas operator to re-install the gas meter, if it had been previously removed, and activate gas service to the residence. This next step can occur as long as 24 hours after the gas purveyor has been contacted.
  • During this entire process, Southwest Plumbing will prepare a daily service ticket to document work performed.
  • We have prepared this information in explanation of the gas test procedure and to better inform our customers.
